In'ter
In’ter
A series of exploratory workshop at Ohio State University’s Dance Department, directed by Johannes Birringer, beginning with the interactive installation 03/08/00, led to the formation of the „Environments“ Lab (2000 – 2003), which focusses on environmental movement/image and sound installations and interactive constellations supported by newly emerging software and camera/microphone capture technologies.
A third workshop, in November 2000, was dedicated to the examination of „blind space“ and was then titled In’ter – referring to the overall principles of composition that guided these intermedia movement performance-exhibitions on a vast empty soundstage.
After being invited to join a partnership formation of telematic dance (dance in telepresence) initiated by John Mitchell at Arizona State University, the Environments Lab helped to co-found ADAPT.
The ADaPT launch performance (March 5, 2001), initially linked OSU with four other dance programs in the U.S (Arizona State Univ., Univ. of Utah, Univ. of California-Irvine, Univ. of Wisconsin). This connectivity launch started for an collaborative online performance series that soon included further partners in the Netherlands, Japan, and Brazil.
In early 2002, Environments Lab created a telepresence work called „Ali Shuffle.“
The lab performance In’ter was one of the more complex arrangements of movement – media in Haskett Hall Soundstage, and laid the ground for the installation Ghost Island, an interactive dance environment, created with Environment V Lab which traveled to the Intermediale Festival in Mainz, Germany, in 2001.
In’ter also inspired the regular online meetings with the ADAPT partners (Association for Dance and Performance Telematics), which included:
