From the border

A cross-cultural installation/exhibition, produced for the Block Gallery, Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois

Curated by Johannes Birringer

Chicago/Evanston,

December 1992 – April 1993

The performance, exhibition and film festival created under the working title „From the border“ is based on the principle of cross-cultural collaboration in an intermedia process bringing together an international group of thirty-five artists and students committed to exploring shared rehearsal and compositional methods.

We wanted to examine how cultural diversity affects, and is in turn affected by, the institutional setting (the university theatre/art gallery) and the power relations that exist in structured, production-oriented processes. How can performers and visual artists, trained in different aesthetic and cultural traditions or speaking and working in different languages of artmaking, come together to develop a shared process?

Some of the processes and exhibition/performance elements in the From the Border Festival are discussed in greater detail in the book Performance on the Edge: Transformations of Culture (Athlone Press, 2000) written by Johannes Birringer
